Scoliosis & Spinal Deformities
Abnormal curvatures of the spine can create discomfort and balance issues for many patients. At Texas Spine Center, we offer several treatment options designed to alleviate suffering and help patients live a full and happy life free from restrictions.
What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis describes curvature in the lateral plane of the spine, an abnormality that occurs when the spine becomes rotated and curved sideways.
The condition often has no known cause, though it may be congenital and/or acquired.
Symptoms
In the early stages of scoliosis, patients rarely show signs or symptoms. As the curvature increases, however, patients may begin to notice a few things.
Symptoms can include:
- Clothes fitting awkwardly
- Changes with walking/gait
- Reduced range of motion
- Trouble breathing
- Pain
Patients who experience any signs of scoliosis need to be carefully evaluated and followed for progression and treated based on symptoms and the degree of curvature. Most patients benefit with conservative care with physical therapy and bracing. If scoliosis progresses, patients may be candidates for minimally-invasive options if surgery is needed.
